With Purim not far away on the calendar, it’s time to start thinking about what to wear to celebrate this monumental time. Anything goes, no holding back. The bigger the brighter the better. Arriving as a group in themed costumes is by far the most popular way to dress up for Purim, because it creates a bigger impact . As it’s pretty much mandatory to wear a costume for Purim, make sure you allow yourself enough time to think about what you’d like to wear and to arrange a time to come in and try on different looks. Super Heroes & Villains
With so many to choose from, the first that comes to mind is “The Incredibles”, because they are a family of Super Heroes. There’s Bob Parr who possesses superhuman strength, stamina, and durability. He is married to Helen Parr, the superheroine known as Elastigirl, and they have three children together: Violet the teenager, little brother Dash, and baby brother Jack-Jack. They all have their own unique superpowers. Helen aka Elastigirl can stretch any part of her body up to 300 feet and can be 1 mm thin. She can also reshape her body in a variety of ways. In the movie she becomes a parachute and a rubber boat, and has used her arms for swings and a slingshot. Violet just wants to be like everyone else, and blend in with normal people, she doesn’t want to stand out. Her superpowers allow her to turn instantly invisible, and to generate spherical force fields to protect herself and also to levitate extremely heavy objects; the interiors of the force fields have an anti-gravitational effect, allowing Violet to levitate inside, but she can be stunned temporarily if the field is struck by a sufficiently large force.
Alice In Wonderland
Alice is a young girl with shoulder-length blonde hair who wears a blue Victorian dress. Alice lives a posh lifestyle in the mid to late 1800s in London, England. She is highly intelligent, and like any well brought up girl she is sophisticated and a great thinker for a seven and a half-year-old child. Alice is extremely brave, not being afraid to venture far out into new places or the unknown and she will become determined to investigate anything curious that makes her wonder.
One warm sunny day on the 4th of May, Alice and her big sister went to relax and read next to a large tree under the cool shade on the flowery meadows by the river banks of London. Alice fell asleep in the hot sun and soon slipped into a midsummer daydream. This is where the crazy story begins. She meets all sorts of characters. The White Rabbit is her first encounter. Followed by the blue caterpiller, the Cheshire Cat, Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum and the Mad Hatter. There is also the evil Queen of Hearts, the King of Hearts and her Card soldiers and many other funny talking animal characters. but if you stick with the main ones, you have at least 10 costumes for your family or group of friends. What an impact for Purim!
The Wizard Of Oz
Dorothy is a young and spritely Kansas girl who lives with her Aunt Em and Uncle Henry and her cute little dog toto, on the farm. After a whirling cyclone lands her house in the land of Oz, she embarks on a journey to the Emerald City to ask the Wizard of Oz how to return to Kansas. Throughout her journey, her goal is to return home despite the wonders and magic of Oz. Along the way she meets and teams up with the Scarecrow, the Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion. off they go to seek out the Wizard but along the way they bump into trouble with the Wicked Witch of the West and her terrifying Flying Monkeys. Glinda is the good witch of the south and helps Dorothy and her friends, she’s the one who reveals to Dorothy the power of her ruby red shoes. With many other characters like the munchkins, who are ruled by the Mayor Munchkin, you have a huge variety of characters you can dress as for Purim, including dressing as Toto.
Shrek
Now this is the theme that you can’t go wrong with for Purim. Almost every fairy tale character is in this movie called Shrek. Shrek is a grumpy, smelly and ugly ogre, living peacefully in a swamp. One night, he suddenly finds his land has been squatted by a mass of fairy-tale creatures (Pinocchio, the three little pigs, Peter Pan, Snow White, Cinderella, among others), who have been banished by the evil Lord Farquaad. One of these is a donkey (who just won’t shut up). Accompanied by him, Shrek confronts Lord Farquaad, demanding his land back. Lord Farquaad tells him he has to rescue Princess Fiona from a dragon-guarded castle, to get his swamp back. Shrek and Donkey go and rescue the Princess. After they return, Fiona hides in a windmill. Donkey finds her and discovers that she’s turned into an ogress. She explains that she’s under a spell, which can only be broken by true love’s first kiss. When the sun rose again, she turned back into a beautiful princess. And so the story begins.
More characters in the story are the Gingerbread Man, Humpty Dumpty, Puss In Boots, the Big Bad Wolf, Prince Charming and Rumplestiltskin. almost every character is covered if you go for this theme.
Sesame Street
“Sesame Street” is a fun program that bridges many cultural and educational gaps on television. One of my favourite tv shows when i was growing up, in fact, i learned to tie my shoelaces watching Sesame Street. It’s loved by children and adults alike. There’s Big Bird, who leads a cast of characters teaching children numbers, colours and the alphabet. Bert and Ernie, Oscar the Grouch, Grover and Elmo are just a few of the other creatures and characters who live on this street. I couldn’t even begin to list all the characters as the numbers have grown extensively since 1969, but the main ones list above are the most popular. These costumes are quite large and furry with oversized heads, so they can be quite warm to wear, but if you can handle the heat, just know that you’ll look amazing arriving at your Purim festivity. These guys will look amazing walking in together because of their big and bold colours and faces. I love this idea!
